written by Es Princep / July 09, 2019

Copa del Rey Mapfre has turned into something bigger than only a sport competition.

It is not just about hundreds of boats sailing through Palma’s bay. This event is much more special than a competition where sailors are fighting for winning the battle against weather with the wind as an ally.

Copa del Rey Mapfre in Mallorca is sailing but mostly, a social event that arouses attention worldwide. The Majorcan capital is adorned in order to be in the limelight. Luxury, Mediterranean Sea, celebrities and saltpetre are merged in a festive, social, special and seafaring atmosphere that turns this competition into one of the most awaited events of the year.

To know the history of this competition, we must go back to the reign of Alfonso XIII, who in 1905, in order to imitate the competitions celebrated in Cowes or Kiel, organized the first Copa del Rey in Getxo, where he spend the summer.

However, it was not until 1982, when King Juan Carlos I got back the competition moving it to Mallorca, where he had his place of residence during the summertime. Around 50 boats took part in this regatta of which 35 were Spanish meanwhile the rest of the participants were foreigners. Currently, 37 years later, the competition has become a first-rate appointment on the world calendar.

During the celebration week, the Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP) is characterized by the comings and goings of people and public figures that are united by their passion: the sea. The sailors show daily their ability to fight and effort, making this event an undeniable reference in the world of sailing.

Celebrities from the world of sport, associated members, guests and the 15.000 crew members enjoy an intense activity both offshore and on land. Every day when the regatta is finished, the RCDN becomes the meeting point where people can enjoy live music, local gastronomy, fun and a cheerful atmosphere that combines the passion for the sea, sports and, of course, Mallorca.

One of the unavoidable dates of Majorcan summer will carry out from next 27th July to 3rd August: the Copa del Rey Mapfre.

The ship-owners’ dinner (Cena de Armadores), which will be celebrated 1st August, is one of the most expected events. But, undoubtedly, one of the most special moments will be the awards presentation ceremony leaded by the king Felipe VI and celebrated at the feet of one of the most beloved monuments by Palma inhabitants: la Seu.

Moreover, from Es Príncep terrace, we can enjoy the privileged views of the boat’s exit and entrance.

Our roof top terrace has one of the best and sharpest perspectives of the competition. A Mediterranean balcony from which you can enjoy amazing views and sunsets in the best company.
